Home Is Where the Heart Is

Some love stories begin with grand gestures, while others start with a simple swipe. For Jemmeah and Adam Topic, their journey began on Tinder, proving that sometimes the most unexpected swiping beginnings lead to the most meaningful endings.

Jemmeah, who grew up in Port Douglas before later moving to Cairns, and Adam, originally from Wollongong, were both immersed in demanding careers when they met. Jemmeah worked in construction while Adam was employed in FIFO mining, leaving little time for traditional dating.

Their shared love of family, however, quickly became the foundation of their relationship. Today, they cherish every moment spent together with their daughter, Malia (then aged 3) and much-loved fur baby, German Shepherd, Ace.

Adam was Jemmeah's very first Tinder date, and from the moment they met, the connection felt effortless.

Conversation flowed naturally, laughter came easily, and there was never a hint of awkwardness. “We could just be ourselves," Jemmeah says. “Everything felt easy from the beginning."

Although there was an undeniable spark, it was the everyday moments that cemented their relationship. Building a life together, supporting one another through busy careers, and finding joy in even the simplest routines made them realise they had found something truly special.

Their relationship is perhaps best summed up by their shared sense of humour. Self-described as "a little bit chaotic", they're often running late, searching for misplaced belongings or organising things at the last minute. Somehow, everything always works out, and they simply laugh through it together.

That easy going spirit carried into one of the biggest moments of their lives. Adam proposed at Pretty Beach in Port Douglas, a place already close to Jemmeah's heart. What she thought would be an ordinary outing with Ace quickly became unforgettable when Adam got down on one knee. “I was completely shocked," she recalls. "There were lots of happy tears and an immediate 'yes'. Having Ace there made it feel so perfectly us."

Choosing Port Douglas as their wedding destination was never really a question. It represented home, family and the place where their engagement had unfolded.

"It felt like everything had come full circle," says Jemmeah. "From where I grew up, to where we got engaged, and finally where we became husband and wife."

The couple exchanged vows at the picturesque Little Cove before celebrating with family and friends at the iconic Sugar Wharf.

Together, the two venues perfectly reflected everything they had envisioned for their day, beautiful, relaxed and unmistakably Port Douglas.

"We wanted something elegant without being too formal," Jemmeah explains. "Somewhere everyone could relax, enjoy themselves and celebrate."

Planning the wedding over eight months was busy but exciting. Rather than becoming overwhelmed by endless decisions, the couple focused on what mattered most: creating a day centred around love, family and lasting memories.

Having the support of Desert Rose Styling alongside PD Weddings & Hire made all the difference. "They brought our vision to life and guided us through every little detail. Having such an incredible team meant we could actually enjoy the planning process instead of stressing over it."

When their wedding day finally arrived, emotions ran high. “There were definitely nerves," Jemmeah says. "But the moment we saw each other, everything else disappeared."

The most emotional moment came not during the ceremony itself, but in sharing it with their daughter, Malia and fur baby, Ace.

"Getting married wasn't just about the two of us anymore. It was about celebrating our little family."

Walking back down the aisle together as husband and wife, surrounded by cheering family and friends, remains one of their favourite memories.

Later that evening, the Sugar Wharf came alive as guests laughed, danced and embraced the relaxed waterfront atmosphere. Looking around the room, the newlyweds realised their vision had become reality.

"Seeing everyone genuinely enjoying themselves was exactly what we'd hoped for."

There were plenty of memorable moments throughout the celebration, including an impromptu fishing competition from the wharf to see who could land Port Douglas' famous barramundi.

Heartfelt speeches filled the evening with laughter and happy tears before the dance floor exploded to the unmistakable opening notes of Sweet Caroline, bringing every generation together for one unforgettable celebration.

Looking back, however, one of the couple's most treasured memories came after the wedding itself.

Their daughter, Malia, has become their biggest fan, watching the wedding video countless times with excitement each and every viewing. "She absolutely loves it," Jemmeah laughs. "Watching her relive the day reminds us just how special it was."

Reflecting on their journey, Jemmeah says everything unfolded exactly as it was meant to.

"From meeting unexpectedly, to getting engaged at Pretty Beach, to getting married in my hometown surrounded by everyone we love, it feels like every step led us here."

For Jemmeah and Adam, their wedding wasn't simply the celebration of one beautiful day. It was a celebration of the life they had already built together and the exciting future that lies ahead—a love story that truly came home to Port Douglas.
