Both originally from Sydney, Luana and Nathan’s story began in an unlikely setting at the gym where a personal training session turned into something far more meaningful. From building muscles to building a relationship, proof that sometimes the best gains at the gym aren’t just physical.

Now based in Cairns, their shared love for the tropical lifestyle naturally led them to choose Port Douglas for their wedding. It was a destination they already knew and loved from many visits with their children. With its relaxed yet vibrant vibe firmly in their hearts, Nautilus Restaurant became the perfect backdrop to bring their celebration to life.

They had never visited Nautilus before their wedding day, but from the moment they discovered it, it felt like the perfect fit. They were drawn to the idea of an outdoor setting that was special, intimate, and effortlessly elegant, somewhere that didn’t require the stress of building a reception from the ground up or navigating permits and logistics.

What truly set it apart was the relaxed, restaurant-style experience, allowing guests to choose their own meals from a menu rather than the traditional alternating drop. It created a more personal, enjoyable dining experience and perfectly reflected the laid-back yet refined feel they wanted for their day.

Five years into their relationship, Nathan proposed in a heartfelt and deeply personal moment on the front deck of their home in a true ‘ decklaration’ of love. With candles and flowers setting the scene, he played a mash-up of Luana’s favourite songs before stepping forward to ask the question, all in front of her three children. It was a moment that beautifully reflected what matters most to them - family.

Planning the wedding themselves, Luana and Nathan found the process surprisingly easy. Sourcing their vendors through Instagram and Google, they made contact via email or direct message and brought everything together with a relaxed confidence. Choosing a weekday helped simplify logistics, and rather than worrying about potential hiccups like weather, they trusted that everything would come together as it was meant to.

The celebration itself stayed true to their easy-going philosophy, relaxed, and full of love. The couple spent the night before together as a family before getting ready separately with close friends and loved ones. Guests travelled from near and far from New Zealand, Samoa, England, Adelaide, Sydney, Mackay, Brisbane and Cairns, all to share in their special day.

While some were a little apprehensive about the tropical heat, it quickly became part of the experience, especially when paired with the lush, tropical beauty of Port Douglas that surrounded them.

There was no strict theme or adherence to tradition. Instead, Luana and Nathan chose colours and styles they loved, creating a day that felt authentically theirs. In a playful twist, their marriage certificate witnesses were chosen by drawing names from a hat, adding a spontaneous and memorable moment to the ceremony. Mango daiquiris at the altar set the tone of fun, relaxation and unapologetically them.

There were countless highlights, from walking back down the aisle as husband and wife to Nathan’s mash-up of “The Time of My Life” from Dirty Dancing and “The Time (Dirty Bit)” by Black Eyed Peas, to the unforgettable moment when their two-year-old Kai stole the microphone during Luana’s vows. Writing their own vows added another deeply personal touch, and having all their family and friends together in one place was something they will always treasure.

Skipping formalities once again, there was no traditional wedding cake, the dessert was simply enjoyed as part of the menu. The atmosphere was brought to life by live band The Night Shift, who kept the energy high throughout the evening, while Luana’s brother Poetik added a special touch by performing a few songs later in the night.

While Nautilus Restaurant offered a stunning setting, the couple also ventured out for photographs at Little Cove and Rex Smeal Park, capturing the natural beauty of the region. The celebrations continued the following day with a relaxed dinner at Central Hotel Port Douglas before guests began their journeys home, while Luana and Nathan returned to Cairns to spend more time with visiting friends.

For couples considering a Far North Queensland wedding, their advice is simple “get married in the dry season.” Set against the breathtaking natural beauty of the region, with its lush tropical landscapes and relaxed coastal charm, Port Douglas created the perfect backdrop. Their day was a true reflection of who they are, relaxed, joyful, a little quirky, and centred around love, family, connection, and a celebration that felt effortlessly, unapologetically them.
