When summer turns the heaters up in Far North Queensland, Port Douglas is ready to help you cool off in style. Whether it’s splashing in rainforest streams, floating in resort pools, or snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef, there’s no shortage of refreshing spots to take a dip! So, dig out the togs and shake out the towels because here’s your guide to the best places to cool off during your visit to the Far North.

1.    Spring Creek & Falls

Tucked away in the Mowbray Valley, less than ten minutes from Port Douglas, Spring Creek is a local favourite and the perfect spot to cool off. Getting there is easy—take the turnoff at Tresize Road, then left onto Spring Creek Road, and follow it until you hit the creek. Once you’re there, dive into the refreshing water, test out the rope swings, and keep an eye out for freshwater turtles swimming alongside you!
For the more adventurous, Spring Creek has an extra treat in store. Continue on until the end of Spring Creek Road and embark on a rock-hopping journey upstream to Black Rock Falls, a secluded oasis completes with a deep swimming hole and cascading waterfalls. It’s a reward well worth the effort but be prepared for a hands-on adventure involving boulder scrambling. This one’s best for experienced explorers looking to add a bit of thrill to their tropical getaway!

2.    Anich’s Creek

If you’re looking to escape the crowds and get the authentic FNQ experience, Anich’s Creek on Finlayvale Road in Mossman is calling your name. A true local gem, this wide, shallow creek offers a family-friendly dip straight off the side of the road in true North Queenslander style. To access, simply drive along Finlayvale road, just north of Mossman, until you spot the creek—it’s that easy! Spend the day lounging on the sandy banks, basking in the sunshine, or bring along some inflatables and enjoy a lazy float downstream. For those wanting a bit more adventure, guided river tours are also available, offering a deeper dive into the Daintree Rainforest. It’s a slice of local paradise you won’t want to miss!

3.    Shannonvale Causeway

Again, located within 15 minutes of Port Douglas, Shannonvale Causeway is a charming spot to cool off on your way to Mossman or the Daintree. Follow the signs toward the Shannonvale Winery, and you’ll soon find this picturesque waterhole waiting to refresh you. Depending on the time of the year, water may or may not be flowing over the road, but no need to cross—simply pull over, jump in, and enjoy before returning the way you came. With its shallow, sandy waters and easy accessibility, this picturesque waterhole is well-suited for families with little ones.

4.    Resort Pools
Sometimes, a touch of luxury is just what the summer calls for, and when it comes to cooling off, Port Douglas’s resort pools deliver in spades. Whether you’re staying at a five-star retreat or just popping in for the day, these sparkling oases redefine relaxation. Imagine this: you’re lounging poolside, sipping on a tropical cocktail (mango daiquiri, perhaps?), with palm trees swaying overhead and a swim-up bar just metres away. I don’t know about you but that sure sounds like my idea of time well-spent! Many resorts boast swim-up bars, stunning infinity pools, and shady cabanas where you can kick back in FNQ style. It’s the ultimate indulgent escape that’ll have you saying, “We need to do this every summer!”

5.    Great Barrier Reef

No trip to the Far North is complete without experiencing one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, right here on our doorstep. So, what better way to cool off this summer than to visit the Great Barrier Reef. Jump aboard a boat from the Port Douglas Marina and head out to the Reef for an unforgettable day of snorkelling, diving or swimming alongside vibrant coral gardens and schools of colourful fish. There’s no better way to beat the heat and tick off a bucket-list experience in one go. Just don’t forget to book in advance to guarantee your spot!

6.    Splash parks

When the tropical sun is blazing, splash parks are another great option to cool off! Just ten minutes north of Port is the Mossman pool. With only a small entry fee little ones can enjoy the baby and wading pools, while the splash park is guaranteed to bring smiles to kids of all ages. With shady pools and BBQ facilities, it’s the ideal spot for a family day out.
Fancy a waterslide or two? Well good news, the Big4 Glengarry waterpark in Mowbray Valley has six. Paired with a resort style pool and a giant tipping bucket, there’s no shortage of entertainment. So, grab a day pass and let the action-packed day begin!
