The King of Port Douglas Entertainment

Words by Jamie Jansen

If you’ve spent more than five minutes in Port Douglas, chances are you’ve already heard about local legend Nick Gibson. Or, at the very least, you’ve heard the crowd going wild at one of his legendary weekly cane toad races. He’s been hosting those iconic local showdowns for years, so it’s fair to say he knows a thing or two about entertaining a room.

He’s practically the undisputed King of Port Douglas, radiating a laid-back, colourful charm. But don't let the relaxed vibe fool you: beneath that easy-going smile is a rock-solid professional who knows how to run a seamless event. As the town's ultimate all-in-one entertainment guy, there’s not much he can’t do; handling everything from the ceremony aisle to the final dance as a celebrant, MC, and DJ.

Nick’s story in the tropics started back in 1994 when he originally arrived to play basketball. Naturally, Far North Queensland life took hold, leading him into hospitality and, eventually, full tilt into the entertainment world. During the town’s quieter off-seasons, Nick ran his own club and jumped behind the decks himself to save a few bucks. It wasn’t long before he sniffed out another niche: Port Douglas was crying out for a male celebrant.

Fast forward two decades, and “The Wedding Guy” has become the town’s ultimate all-in-one celebration maestro. What sets Nick apart is his knack for striking the right balance between heart and humour.

“Come to me if you don’t want the ceremony to be the boring part,” he laughs.

He crafts weddings that feel genuinely personal, packed with laughter, warmth, and just enough magic to keep everyone hooked, all while quietly taking care of the legal details behind the scenes.

Once the "I do’s" are wrapped up, Nick seamlessly pivots into MC and DJ mode. He keeps the room moving and the dance floor packed right through to the last call. For couples looking to simplify their planning (and save a few dollars along the way), booking his full package - celebrant, DJ, and MC - is a total breeze. “I also insist I won’t be offended if you only book one of my services,” Nick adds. “Go with whatever works for you!”

And yes, if you want to give your guests a truly unforgettable tropical welcome, he can even bring along his famous racing superstars for a private cane toad show. It’s an absolute hit for destination weddings, especially for overseas guests looking for a taste of authentic local flair (strictly non-culinary, of course!).

Ultimately, Nick’s philosophy comes down to taking the stress completely off the couple’s shoulders. Working with happy people on the best day of their lives - and getting the crowd chanting in unison during toad shows- is a fun way to make a living, but for him, nothing compares to receiving a glowing review. “That’s really what you strive for,” he says.

When asked for his single best piece of advice for couples planning their big day, Nick keeps it characteristically real: “Book who works for you. There are so many good celebrants and DJs in the area. Whether we meet in person or via video chat, we just need to click. It’s a long day if we’re not on the same page! But if I'm your right vibe, let’s have some fun.”
