Uncovering the secret of Oak Beach
Words by Lisa Keller
There’s a kind of luxury that can’t be measured in bedrooms or square footage. It’s hearing the sound of the ocean as you wake up. It’s knowing your neighbours by name, and their dogs too. It’s being a short drive from everything you need while feeling a world away from it all.
Twenty minutes south of Port Douglas, you’ll find exactly that. No crowds. No traffic. Just coastal living at its finest and a slower pace of life that’s becoming increasingly rare.
This is Oak Beach.
While Port Douglas continues to shine as Tropical North Queensland's holiday hotspot, Oak Beach quietly remains one of the region's best-kept secrets. As more people trade busy cities for slower living, this tiny coastal community offers the privacy, space and a genuine sense of belonging they’re searching for.
If you’ve ever been to Port Douglas, you will have, knowingly or otherwise, driven straight past this little idyllic haven. Sprawling across both sides of the Captain Cook Highway, Oak Beach offers both oceanfront living and a rainforest retreat. The choice comes down to personal preference, but whichever side of the highway calls your name, you’re guaranteed the same community feel that only a small town can provide.
Just ask Oak Beach local, Victoria Carpenter. While it was the house that initially drew her to the region, it was the lifestyle that kept her coming back for over a decade.
“I was living in Missouri when I first found the property online and remember thinking, 'Where the heck is Oak Beach?' But it looked so perfect, I just knew I had to have it."
That leap of faith turned into something far greater than a property purchase. "My first impression was just magic," she says. "It's a pocket of paradise."
More than a decade later, Victoria has transformed the home into a reflection of its surroundings. Inspired by the colours and textures of Oak Beach itself, she designed the renovation to blur the line between indoors and out.
