WORDS by Jamie Jansen

It’s a phrase you’ll hear often in this part of the world: “Where the rainforest meets the reef”. But did you know you can quite literally camp, or stay in a cabin, right where these two natural wonders collide, with nature wrapping around you from every direction?

Here, where two World Heritage wonders - the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest - meet at the shoreline, Cape Tribulation Camping offers a stay unlike anywhere
Else.

It’s the kind of place where you can disappear under the rainforest canopy, feel the sand between your toes and listen to nothing but birdsong and the ocean breeze. It might just be
one of the most special places on earth.

Whether you’re pitching a tent right on the beachfront, tucking yourself away into the greenery, or settling into a comfortable off-grid cabin, it’s all possible here.

If you dream of falling asleep to the sound of the sea, the Beach Camp area is for you. Just metres from the ocean, these shady sites are nestled among palm trees with direct beach access.

Prefer something more remote? Green Camp is the newest addition; a wide stretch of open bushland made for true off-grid camping. There are no marked sites or power, just plenty of
space to spread out, pick your spot, and enjoy the quiet.

For those after a bit more comfort, the newly built cabins, completed in May 2025, offer a stylish yet simple retreat, perfect for two, with a queen bed and everything you need to unwind in nature. Each one is air-conditioned and comes with an outdoor shower - because honestly, what’s better than rinsing off while surrounded by nature?

Just a short stroll away is The Sandbar, also newly built, offering relaxed beachfront dining with views of the Cape Tribulation coastline and surrounding rainforest. The lunch and
dinner menu features delicious wood-fired pizzas and burgers, made with local ingredients and cooked in the traditional wood oven.

At the bar, you’ll find tap beer, cocktails, and barista-made coffee. There are also a few extras to keep things fun, including a pool table, live sports on TV, and a firepit to gather
around. The space is also available to book for private functions.

Time your visit right, and you might catch one of their monthly live music nights. Local musicians perform under the stars throughout the season, with the sound of the ocean in
the background and the fire crackling nearby.

This writer happened to be there for the very first one, when local musician Shannon Hunter filled the air with his laid-back acoustic tunes. Kids ran barefoot between the trees, families shared wood-fired pizzas at long communal tables, and the whole night had a relaxed, intimate feel.

Just beyond the bar, a short stroll leads you to one of the campground’s most talked-about spots: a mangrove-lined creek inlet. This is where many come hoping to spot Fluffy, a
resident crocodile affectionately named by locals. He’s often seen basking or gliding through the water at low tide. Don’t worry, though. Keep your distance, respect his space, and you’ll be just fine.

Keep your eyes open and you might spot a cassowary, an ancient, emu-like bird with glossy black feathers and a bright blue neck, often called the dinosaur of the Daintree. You might
also see a water dragon sunning itself or a monitor lizard slipping into the shade. It’s a great spot for birdwatchers, and the creek is popular with fishers too, full of mangrove jack and
other local fish.

Twice a day, you’ll also see the local horse riding tours passing along the inlet walk, another way to experience the landscape if you're up for something different.

At Cape Tribulation Camping, there’s a certain kind of quiet you only find beneath the rainforest canopy. It’s a place where the days slow down and where the simple things - good
company, open skies, and a crackling fire - are what matter most.
