This great indigenous dance-off in Laura is guaranteed to saturate your senses.
Rich in culture and stories of the land, the indigenous communities of Cape York come to together on sacred ground. The prize? The coveted shield, celebration of culture and bags of pride, all to take back to their mob, won through their art of song and dance. A fun filled and educational weekend for everyone to enjoy. This festival runs bi-annually and sells out – you have been warned.

2023 PROGRAM
Thursday 6th July

  • VIP welcome cocktail function to be held at the Quinkan Cultural Centre in Laura

Friday 7th July

  • Opening Ceremony
  • Welcoming Parade: All dance troupes will be marched onto the Bora grounds in preparation for the formal proceedings
  • Welcome to Country by Quinkan Dancers
  • Official handover of the Laura Dance Shield
  • Senior and Junior groups Dance Competition Round 1: All groups will be judged by appointed national judges who will come from various parts of Australia and are specialists in their fields.
  • Cape York Arts Exhibition - all artworks on display for the duration of the festival, opportunity to meet with artists
  • Round 1 Didge to Didge competition
  • Healthy Hub - an opportunity for different health providers to the communities to come together
  • Workshops - Didgeridoo making, indigenous arts and crafts, Yarning circles
  • Rock Art visits - Split Rock

Saturday 8th July

  • Senior and Junior groups Dance Competition round 2 - All groups will be judged by appointed national judges who will come from various parts of Australia and are specialists in their fields.
  • Cape York Arts Exhibition - all artworks on display for the duration of the festival, opportunity to meet with artists
  • Round 2  Didge to Didge competition - knock out round and winner announced
  • Healthy Hub - an opportunity for different health providers to the communities to come together
  • Workshops - Didgeridoo making, indigenous arts and crafts, Yarning circles
  • Rock Art visits - Split Rock

Sunday 9th July

  • Senior and Junior groups Dance Competition Finals and winners announced
  • Cape York Arts Exhibition - all artworks on display for the duration of the festival, opportunity to meet with artists - Winners announced
  • Healthy Hub - an opportunity for different health providers to the communities to come together
  • Workshops - Didgeridoo making, indigenous arts and crafts, Yarning circles
  • Rock Art visits - Split Rock
  • Closing ceremony
