the success of Computershare and together they have collaborated
on various other ventures. This close familial relationship extends
into friendship, with Penelope being one of his closest confidantes.
With the addition of Mount Mulligan Lodge, west of Cairns, an
authentic Australian outback experience was also added to Morris
Group. The pinnacle of this destination is the mountain itself. A
sandstone bluff, larger than Uluru, you cannot help but be a little
awestruck as you approach the Lodge to behold this majestic natural
wonder. Chris’ eyes light up when he describes the sunsets, how
the light dances across this impressive rock with its mesmerising
transformation of colours. A sense of wonder, almost an ethereal
inner peace instilled. Steeped in the history of the gold fields of
Australia, for those who have not yet visited, it is a magical place!
Forging a now well-travelled path in tourism, Chris’ recent venture
arose out of a practical need to support this working cattle station.
Just half an hour from Port Douglas, surrounded by lush acreage,
farmhouse Kuramar emerged as a solution to accommodate the
200 cows from Mount Mulligan Station that required fattening.
Whilst visiting Kuramar, Chris noticed that the local pub had lain
dormant since COVID and he decided to purchase Julatten Hotel, 5
kilometres down the road. Chris laughs as he reminisces, “Although I
was told in no uncertain terms that it’s the locals that own the pub!”
Looking ahead, Chris is not resting on his laurels, as he has more
in store. Later this year, he will unveil his newest Island experience,
Pelorus Private Island. Located near Orpheus Island within the Palm
Island group, it will offer seclusion and a luxurious escape.
As well as unveiling Pelorus Private Island, Ardo Hotel will open later
this year. It will be a 5-star hotel with two 5-star restaurants and
rooftop pool with bar next to The Ville in Townsville.
It begs the question, “When does Chris get to take a break and how
does he enjoy some off time?”
FUTURE PLANS
It goes without saying that Chris holds a profound affection for Far
North Queensland. Through smart investments this hard-working
family is fortunate enough to have an array of beautiful properties
and experiences to choose from. Interestingly, when asked about
his favoured vacation spots, his answer resonates with the present
company, as he openly states that Port Douglas is undeniably one
of his top picks!
Maybe Chris’ passion for boats has something to do with this? (Yes,
he has already accumulated a small fleet of superyachts. One based
in the Mediterranean but two homed right here in Port Douglas, in
M.Y. Beluga and M.Y. Flying Fish).
Fortunately for us though, Chris has fallen for the Port Douglas
charm and this weekend he has invited friends up for the annual
Taste Port Douglas food and drink festival, which showcases our
region’s rich food culture.
Sitting on the deck of the Beluga, relishing a delightful morning tea,
blue skies, a gentle sea breeze in a comfortable 26 degrees and the
bluff of the Mossman Gorge peeking its head up into the Douglas
skyline, it is easy to appreciate why Chris looks pretty relaxed.
We wonder if we should address the small rumour that is circling the
docks? A topic of interest amongst locals and regular visitors. We
decided to broach it. “Is there a possibility that Morris Group would
ever consider adding the Port Douglas marina to its acquisitions?”
Chris does not hide his open interest. It appears, along with Double
Island off Cairns, he believes both hold immense potential but
interestingly he adds, “Is this what the locals want though (for the
marina)?” A humble yet interesting question raised in return and
food for thought for all of us.
THE JOURNEY
Reflecting on his journey, we ask Chris what advice he would give
to his 17-year-old self? “It’s simple,” he says, “Embrace your dreams!
Oh, and find amusement in the concept of detailed five-year plans!”
As he himself has never followed such structured outlines.
And so, the story of Chris Morris, a man whose journey was spurred
by his mother’s encouragement to enrol in the first computer
OPPOSITE PAGE course in Australia, stands as proof of life’s unpredictable path. One
M.Y Flying Fish; thing is for sure though, there are no airs and graces here, just a
