MOSSMAN MARKET
If you’re in the area on a Saturday, head over to Mossman, a picturesque
township surrounded by sugarcane fields and protective mountains. Here
you will find the Saturday markets, organised by a circle of craftspeople,
local farmers, and food lovers. You’ll come across around 40 stalls with
a large variety of fruit and vegetables, organic treats and exotic local
produce.
You’ll also discover handmade jewellery and clothing, rare books and
other delights. There is something for everyone at the Mossman market,
and you certainly can’t beat the community atmosphere under the ancient
raintrees.
JANBAL GALLERY
The “Janbal” is a grey, blue-skinned rainforest berry cherished by the
locals and found in the area around Mossman Gorge. It was also the given
name of the founder’s mother and the inspiration for the Janbal Gallery in
Mossman. This is a truly original art gallery, protected by the Yiki People
and the place where you can learn all about the Kuku Yalanji culture.
Be ready for a hands-on experience as you delve into Aboriginal art and
culture. Founder Brian Binna Swindley runs workshops regularly for
either individuals or groups, as he shares his passion and culture. You can
also purchase original paintings, artefacts, or didgeridoos when you visit.
THE CLINK THEATRE
Catch a professional local theatre production or enjoy that front row
feeling from every seat in the house when visiting artists grace the stage
in this magical repurposed building full of history. Once the police lock-up,
hence the quirky Australian slang name, it was transformed as the home of
the Douglas Theatre Arts Group Inc. A true community showcase of talent
in a one of a kind setting with the “best little bar in town”!
Ticket sales contribute to the Jack Heywood Memorial Arts Fund which
supports the nurturing of local visual artists so make sure to check the box
office online for upcoming performances.
DAB GALLERY
Douglas Arts Base (DAB) is a fun, friendly and not-for-profit community
arts centre in downtown Mossman. This studio gallery was set up to help
teach, promote and encourage artisans in the area and celebrate that
unique vibe that makes Port Douglas and surrounding areas so special.
Within the gallery, you can participate in tutored or peer groups, where
you’ll mix and share ideas with like-minded people.
Sign up for some weekly classes or, if you’re pressed for time, you can opt
for a half-day, three-hour all ages. Workshops offered are varied and can
include mosaics, pottery, screen-printing, stained glass as well as drawing
and painting. Visitors are most welcome to DAB, which is run entirely by
volunteers, but where the tutors are all very highly qualified professionals.
And don’t forget to pick up a gift to remind you of your visit.
