LETTER
H oliday – Described in one dictionary as “an extended period of leisure and
recreation especially one spent away from home.”
Whether you are at home planning your vacation escape or lucky enough
to find yourself in Port Douglas right now, you have certainly come to the
right place to “holiday.” When our busy lifestyle drives us relentlessly day to
day, the mere thought of this word sends the world immediately into a better
place. Relax, experience a new adventure, engage in several lazy lunches, or even just stop and
enjoy the quiet. The great news … this is what this region is all about!
Not a day goes by when I do not appreciate where I live. The natural beauty is without question
breathtaking. Add fresh air, a light sea breeze and it makes me want to pull on my running
shoes, grab my always willing partner, Roxy the dog, and get out and explore. No phone, no
noise, no worries – the only thing recharging, me! Certainly good for the soul and, my family
would possibly argue, them too!
Then there are the people. Make sure you take the time to meet the locals. From all walks of life,
many have chosen a work-lifestyle balance and this all adds to laid back feel of this town.
Take Rob Prettejohn. With his family by his side and his passion, he built an eco and wildlife retreat “from the ground up” that is Thala
Beach Nature Reserve.
Then there’s the Millers. Apart from making arguably the best doughnuts in the world, this family’s journey to “Put Up the Dukes” is
both humbling and inspirational. You will find them at the Port Douglas Sunday markets. Go and say “hello.” They’ll love it.
Which leads me to food, glorious food! If you enjoy an abundance of fresh produce, accompanied by fantastic grapes, then you need
to turn straight to page 62 and whet your appetite with any of the signature dishes. Port Douglas has some of the best restaurants, so
whether you are looking for fine dining, a healthy snack, fresh seafood or even catering for your special day, look no further.
And finally, a question I get asked regularly (and is usually said with a wry smile): “As locals, are you constantly on holiday?”
My answer: “Well, come and see for yourself … and then I’ll let you be the judge of that!”
Whatever you choose,
Enjoy YOUR time
Sarah
